Encaustic & Pigment Stick
|
Instructor: Shawna Moore
For this workshop we will simplify the encaustic studio and the process of painting. Using thin coats of encaustic paint (wax) applied with bigger brushes and high quality pigment in stick form, we will "trap" our marks, drawings and mistakes under layers of wax to create rich and dynamic images. Learn how to create smooth, depth filled paintings involving abstract and landscape imagery.

Description:
moving up through the surface, adding imagery and maintaining a sense of light from deep within the painting. Think Italian fresco, old parchment, and beautiful stone cliffs with Indian petroglyphs.
Day 1: Learning the Basics:
What is encaustic?

Materials
Abstraction: press in chains or metal grids or make drawings into the surface create a harmonious palette. Highlights and imagery
Day 2: Landscape: hint at the landscape. Remove any extra paint or mistakes and lightly fuse. Cover this first attempt with a thin coat of wax and then repeat until you have created the sense of depth and detail you desire. At this point you can draw on top of the landscape using transfer paper or add textural detail by drawing into the surface or pressing things into the wax to make marks. Think of the way trees and hills are reflected in water and the atmospheric paintings of Turner.
Day 3: Colage: create texture with the iron and the oil paint, use pages from old books, maps, and Asian papers with characters and writing, experiment with additional materials like pattern pieces or photos.
Think of Ashley Collin’s horse paintings and the way yellowed photographs and old paper is so interesting. The paintings could feel like opening an old trunk in an attic and coming across interesting treasures.

Shawna Moore approaches her art as an exploration into her imagination and her inner response to people, places and things. Rather than reporting on what is literally seen, her work relays intuition, impression, and interior.
Moore is an established, professional painter and encaustic artist living in Whitefish, Montana, with exhibits in galleries in Montana, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, and New Jersey. Anchored by the use of color and the immediacy of art making, Moore has spent the past 20 years developing and refining her artistic process and intention. Her art integrates elements of painting and drawing, and reflects both her education in architecture and fine art, and her inventive and experimental nature.
