| DECEMBER 2010 |
Clay Monoprint
Instructor: Mitch Lyons
Since 1968 he has been pioneering his image making from a slab of clay. First a slab of stoneware clay is rolled out about 1/4" thick. After allowing the slab to dry to a "leather hard" consistency, colored slips are made using China clay and permanent pigments. These colored slips are brushed on, dried and rolled into the clay slab, one color over another, building the design with images, colors and textures on the "matrix".
Once the slab is rolled flat, a moistened piece of paper/canvass is placed over the slab. Pressure is applied using a rolling pin to transfer the clay slips onto the substrate. Because China clay is inert and the pigments used are permanent and stable, the clays remain intact and will give pleasure for many years.

Why is it so Important to be Spontaneous?
Each of us possesses a strong creative ability. Life is a process of creation and discovery. Color, line and metaphor provide a subtle language that we can access at any time. Our souls speak to us in imagery and through symbolism in dreams,
in our daily lives, and through the act of spontaneous image making.
Come explore three day's of tapping into your intuitive impulses, and bridging trust with your instinctual responses to art making. Lauren facilitates individual engagement using innovative techniques such as idea-generating exercises, and visualizations that break through self-imposed barriers.
In a safe and playful environment Lauren leads participants into authentic engagement with the act of making.
Through demos, and process we will explore mark-making, paint, collage, wax, and handmade gesso. This is an excellent workshop for those seeking to expand their art practice and stimulate their hidden muse. |

Trashy Novels
Instructor: Michael DeMeng
Now I’m of a belief that to be a great artist you need to put yourself, body and soul, into your pieces. So perhaps I’m taking it a bit far with this idea, but hey why not create a nice little space for you to dwell in after you “shuffled off this mortal” coil? In this class we’ll be making mixed media urns or reliquaries to house very special items (heirlooms, old letters, or even YOU) for posterity. Sure it sounds a bit morbid but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with the idea.
Date: Wed. Jan 19 - Fri. Jan 21
Fee: $425.

Lockets have been used for centuries as a way to a treasured photograph or other keepsake close at hand. Lockets also give the wearer the power to grant or deny access to outsiders to the mystery secreted inside. In this class you will construct a hinged locket similar to the examples. The fabrication of the locket with a hinged cover will be accomplished using a variety of cold connection techniques.
